Speaking at the forum on Tuesday, May 14, Jason mentioned that 15 months after Jimmy Carter ceased medical interventions, “he really is, I think, coming to the end.” He emphasized the significance of this phase in Jimmy’s faith journey, noting that it holds unique importance as it can only be experienced at life’s end.

Jason, who leads the Carter family’s human rights organization, had previously shared similar thoughts with PEOPLE eight months ago. Ahead of Jimmy’s 99th birthday, he noted, “My grandfather right now is really physically limited — he’s coming to the end, as is obvious by the fact that he’s been in hospice — and so in that way I think he’s frustrated.” Despite his physical limitations, Jimmy Carter found solace in reflecting on his life and values during this period.

Even with their health challenges, the Carters continued to support each other. “They are in love at home together and at peace with whatever comes,” Jason told PEOPLE, highlighting the enduring love story that has defined their lives.
